Everybody loves money. Most people want to have an easier life. Nine out of ten dentists who tried Ajax toothpaste agree it tastes really good. Since most people believe this, so should you. Humans are hard wired to follow the crowd. After all, we are pack animals.
There isn't much money in zagging when everybody is zigging. Nor is there any evolutionary benefit. All those cavemen dudes who zigged when everybody zagged got eaten by velociraptors. That's why this tendency to follow the crowd is hard wired into our brains.
How can you leverage this? Let me count the ways. Keep reading.
When people come to your site for the first time, they'll make a quick assessment about how much they trust you. This is crucially important if you expect to sell anything to first time visitors. If nobody trusts you, you wouldn't be able to sell water to a starving man in the desert.
On the other hand, with enough trust, you'd be able to sell ice to an Eskimo. During winter. In the middle of a snowstorm. Actually that's not so hard to imagine, since they build those houses out of ice. At least in the cartoons.
Where was I? Oh yea, social proof. If you've got tons of social proof, then that goes a long way in building trust. After all,if so many other people like you, why shouldn't anybody else? A great way to do this is by getting those social sharing buttons. When people pop onto your website, and they see you've already got thousands of Facebook likes and tweets, you're in business.
How do you get those likes? Ah, the old catch twenty-two. You can't get likes unless you've already got likes. One thing that works pretty well is to simply ask people to like you. Just putting a button up there won't do you much good. Put buttons right there in the middle of your post. Say something like this:
"If you like reading this post, then how about liking it? Thanks!" And then put the like button right there.
It might take a while to get started, but once you start getting more and more likes and tweets, you'll start getting more.
Another way to use social proof is to get some testimonials. These are crucial for anybody selling anything. You can sell your product for a discount in exchange for a review. Most marketing departments with million dollar budgets know that if you give somebody a product and ask for an "honest" review, it's generally pretty positive.
If you do the same thing, you'll get the same result. Even if you get reviews of how horrible your product is, nobody says you've got to put it on your site.
Another way to get plenty of social proof is to have plenty of comments. Take your average squeeze page, for example. Most of them don't have any comments. But some savvy marketers have some interesting squeeze pages set up. They've got a video, and the box below for emails.
But under that, they've got hundreds and hundreds of comments. Most of us instinctively realize that for everybody that comments, there's probably ten more people who have signed up. And when we know there's plenty of people that have already given their email address, we are much more likely to join the crowd.
How do you get all the comments? Easy! Just post a link to your new squeeze page on some popular forums related to your niche. Say something like, "Hey, check out this squeeze page I just made! If you like my video, please write a comment." That way, it's a lot more natural.
Even if some people write something like, "Hey dude, this video sucks! I'd never buy anything from you!" It will still work. Remember, you're just trying to give a quick impression to people. Not a lot of people are going to read through all the comments.
When you try any or all of these techniques, you'll find they have a powerful effect on your online trust and authority. And that means you'll make a lot more money. By the way, if you liked this article, like it! Know what I mean?
