Not So Fast, Neutrinos!
A few months ago, subatomic particles called neutrinos zipped through the news faster than the speed of light, supposedly breaking the universal speed limit, toppling Einstein in the process, and igniting arguments among physicists everywhere. It turns out, however, that those extraordinary results might have a rather mundane explanation: a glitch in the wiring of the experiment.
"Neutrinos turn out to be a very weird form of matter that we?re still trying to figure out," Robert Svoboda says. Svoboda is a physicist at the University of California, Davis, who studies how neutrinos work. He says that while he remains skeptical of the original results, he and others in the community were intrigued by the idea that neutrinos could travel faster than light. "People were willing to give it the benefit of the doubt because they [neutrinos] seem to break other physical laws," he says.
Sixty nanoseconds (a nanosecond is one billionth of a second) don?t seem like much to us, but that time difference is incredibly important to physicists who work under the Einstein-based theory that nothing can travel faster than the speed of light in a vacuum. Finding something that traveled faster than light would require a re-writing of textbooks and some changes in experimental physics.
Neutrinos have more to offer physicists than potential speed-limit-defying stunts. Svoboda and others are trying to unravel the particles? enigmatic behavior because neutrinos could explain why the universe looks the way it does.
The official statement from CERN says that the team behind that experiment identified two different problems that could have affected the timing of the experiment, one that would have overestimated the time, and one that would have underestimated it. The team now says it plans to re-run the tests in May. Meanwhile, other groups around the world will try to re-create the experiment over the course of the next year.
The argument isn?t over. The physics community is still puzzling over the aftermath of the results released last September. Neutrinos are a big deal in particle physics and could hold the answers to very large questions about how the universe works.
Law-Breaking Particles
"Neutrinos turn out to be a very weird form of matter that we?re still trying to figure out," Robert Svoboda says. Svoboda is a physicist at the University of California, Davis, who studies how neutrinos work. He says that while he remains skeptical of the original results, he and others in the community were intrigued by the idea that neutrinos could travel faster than light. "People were willing to give it the benefit of the doubt because they [neutrinos] seem to break other physical laws," he says.
For instance: Scientists know that neutrinos come in three types: electron, muon, and tau. Other, larger subatomic particles, such as quarks, also come in three varieties. But unlike those quarks, neutrinos have the weird ability to transition between these forms as they travel through space, and researchers are still trying to figure out how or why.
That was the intended purpose of the experiment in Italy last fall: to catch neutrinos in the act of breaking the law by changing their type on the fly. To that end, researchers at the Oscillation Project with Emulsion-tRacking Apparatus (OPERA) shot a beam of muon neutrinos from CERN headquarters in Geneva to Gran Sasso, Italy, a little over 450 miles away. The Gran Sasso National Laboratory is the largest underground lab in the world, situated under nearly 4600 feet of rock. The rock blocks out the irritating cosmic radiation found on the Earth?s surface, allowing scientists to study subatomic particles without interference.
They had hoped to see some tau neutrinos appear on the receiving end, demonstrating that the particles could shift while in transit. The experiment did catch some tau neutrinos, but one day it caught something more exciting: neutrinos arriving 60 nanoseconds earlier than they were supposed to.
Physics Showdown

Svoboda says that while many theoretical physicists were seriously questioned the results, the experimental physicists he talked to have been a bit more circumspect, wanting to get more information from other experiments. "We?ve seen things that we think are absolutely right turn out to be wrong, and vice versa," he says. Future experiments, both at OPERA and other locations in the U.S. and Japan, should help to prove or disprove the results.
As for a faulty wire messing up the timing measurements? It?s certainly a plausible explanation. "It takes electrical signals and light signals time to travel through a wire" Svoboda says. Researchers have to account for that tiny lag time by knowing the length of all the wires in a system and adjust their findings to get an accurate result.
Even without a wire problem messing with the timing, tracking neutrinos is extremely difficult. They rarely interact with matter; billions are zooming through your body right now. To spot neutrinos, the scientists at OPERA have to work with a huge detector made of 150,000 bricks of a photographic film, separated by lead sheets and stacked into large walls. If the equipment tells the scientists that they?ve got a neutrino interaction, they can then take the bricks out of the wall and develop them as they would camera film.
Secrets of the Universe

One of the big unanswered questions in physics is, to be blunt, why enough matter exists to form stars, galaxies, planets, and even puny humans. Matter and antimatter annihilate each other on contact and theory would suggest that equal parts of both existed after the big bang, yet here we are in a matter-based universe. Svoboda thinks that perhaps neutrinos shifted the balance between matter and antimatter soon after the big bang.
Most particles have a corresponding antiparticle (quarks and antiquarks, hydrogen and antihydrogen), and neutrinos do too, but antineutrinos behave very differently from other antiparticles. Specifically, antineutrinos spin only to the right and neutrinos spin to the left, while in other matter?antimatter pairs the spin would be the same in both. Researchers are trying to figure out if this discrepancy in behavior means that neutrinos can actually transform antimatter into matter. If this is the case, they could have interfered just enough to allow more matter than antimatter to survive.
It?s a cool theory, but in order to prove it, scientists first have to figure out how neutrinos work and how exactly they would interact with the rest of the particles in the universe?no small order. Svoboda is one of the leading scientists on a future project, the Long Baseline Neutrino Experiment (LBNE) which would stretch from Fermilab near Chicago to the South Dakota/Wyoming border. The LBNE would be similar to the Gran Sasso experiment in Italy?scientists would fire neutrinos from Fermilab toward the detector in South Dakota. "We would look to see if the right- and left-handed neutrinos would interact [so that] one was producing more electron neutrinos than the other type," Svoboda says.
It?s a mystery that won?t be answered for at least another decade, when the LBNE should be complete. That?s a long time to wait, but for some physicists, the magnitude of the potential discovery makes the wait worthwhile. "If you were a biologist and you?d only ever seen plants, it would be like seeing an animal for the first time" Svoboda says. "That?s why people are interested in studying them, there?s no telling what other weird stuff they do."

Skyfall Will Land on IMAX
The new James Bond film, Skyfall, will be headed to IMAX.? It will be the first film in the franchise to go IMAX and will be release simultaneously with the film?s November 9th release date (October 26th internationally).? TheCentral Board of Direct Taxes?(CBDT) made it clear in the notification that?tax exemption is valid for only two types of incomes, namely salary from employment and income by way of interest from a saving bank account.
The additional requirements and conditions to avail the benefit are:
- Interest earned from a savings bank account should not exceed Rs 10,000.
- The individual has obtained a Permanent Account Number (?PAN?) from the Income-tax authorities and has reported the same to his employer.
- The individual has reported to his employer the interest income and the employer has deducted the tax thereon.
- The individual has received a certificate to of tax deduction at source (?Form 16?) from his employer which mentions the PAN, details of income and the tax deducted at source and deposited to the credit of the Central Government.
- The individual has discharged his total tax liability for the assessment year through tax deduction at source and its deposit by the employer to the Central Government.
- The individual has received salary from a single employer throughout the financial year.
- The individual has not claimed a tax refund for the income of the relevant financial year.
Persons with income sources other than salary and interest income from a savings bank account (i.e. getting salary from more than two employers and those having refund claims)will not be entitled to the exemption from filing?tax returns.

American Airlines' AMR posts $1.1 billion 4Q loss (AP)
DALLAS ? AMR Corp., the parent of American Airlines, said Wednesday that it lost $1.1 billion in the fourth quarter as it wrote down the value of planes and other property and paid more for jet fuel.
The company, which filed for bankruptcy protection in November, said that the results compared with a loss of $97 million a year earlier, when AMR still hoped to avoid bankruptcy by cutting costs.
The most recent loss included $768 million in special items, including $725 million from write-downs of aircraft that the company had announced two weeks ago. It also took a $43 million hit as it changed assumptions on recognition of revenue in its frequent-flier program.
Excluding special items, AMR said it would have lost $209 million, compared to an after-items loss of $69 million a year ago.
American is the nation's third-biggest airline, and it has presented a business-as-usual face since becoming the latest in a long string of U.S. airlines to file for bankruptcy protection. Even though it is still losing money, the airline is benefiting from higher ticket prices and decent demand for travel.
AMR said fourth-quarter revenue rose 7.4 percent to $6 billion. Analysts expected $5.89 billion, according to FactSet.
The amount of revenue for every mile flown by one seat, a closely watched measure in the airline industry, rose 8.9 percent, a reflection of the higher fares.
But costs have also mounted, especially for fuel, which accounts for about one-third of an airline's budget.
AMR paid about $3.01 per gallon for jet fuel, up from $2.42 per gallon a year earlier, for an increase of 24.5 percent. The company said it spent $394 million more on fuel than it would have at last year's prices.
For the full year, the company posted a net loss of $2 billion, compared with a loss of $471 million in 2010. Revenue rose to $23.98 billion from $22.17 billion.
AMR, American and affiliate American Eagle filed for bankruptcy protection Nov. 29. Company management proposes to slash annual costs by $2 billion through steps including eliminating 13,000 jobs and terminating pension plans for 130,000 current and former workers. It says it can boost revenue by $1 billion per year with additional flights in key markets and better services.
The company's shares no longer trade on the New York Stock Exchange, and it decided to drop the conference call with analysts that typically goes with a quarterly earnings report.

'Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter' Is 'Far Out There,' Star Says

When you think of our 16th president, the first thing that comes to mind probably isn't vampires, but the new film "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter" hopes to change that.
MTV News spoke with star Benjamin Walker and director Timur Bekmambetov at an event for the movie at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum in Springfield, Illinois, the former leader's hometown.
After screening the first trailer, plus some additional scenes, and taking a few questions from the audience, Walker and Bekmambetov sat down with MTV News to talk Lincoln and attempting to tackle portraying his secret history as a killer of the undead.
Walker made a name for himself on Broadway playing a different president in "Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson." His first major starring role, "Vampire Hunter" may seem like an odd choice, but Walker's first question about the part had nothing to do with the former president or vampires. "My initial reaction was, 'Who's directing it?' " Walker said. "Then as soon as somebody said Timur, I was relaxed about it. It's in good hands."
The flick also marks Walker's debut as an action hero, a far cry from his days onstage. To the actor, though, the transition wasn't too difficult, thanks to his director. "The way that Timur works, it's all the same thing," he explained. "The process is different, but they're the same muscles, the creation of another human being. It's the same thing, whether you're shooting it on a lens or you're during it live in front of people.
"The way that Timur works, it's so visceral, it feels like you're doing it in front of a live audience," he continued. "The movie's going to be in 3-D. It's going to be like you're really there."
Of course, the premise raised some questions for the star, and Walker admitted there was definitely some intrigue. "I was curious, certainly. I didn't find it off-putting," he said. "You go to the movies today, and you're watching reboots and sequels and comics and toys. Frankly, it was really refreshing to see something so new and so far out there. I just was curious."
Bekmambetov is no stranger to horror or over-the-top action. The Russian supernatural thrillers "Night Watch" and "Day Watch" established the director as someone worth paying attention to, and "Wanted" marked his crossover to the American mainstream.
With "Vampire Hunter," the challenge of striking just the right chord attracted the director. "I was involved in a journey to deal with a real historical figure, with an icon, with a monument, and to try to balance tonally the genre and the real, almost sacred, figure," Bekmambetov explained. "It was difficult."
The film might have been a challenge to make, but according to Walker, the bizarre premise is one that shouldn't be too difficult for audiences to swallow. "He's someone we already recognize as an American hero. Now, we get to see him as an action hero. What's better than that?" he said.
Having completely rewritten the story of Lincoln is sure to leave a lasting impression on both Walker and Bekmambetov, who joked that he will no longer look at a $5 bill the same way: "Now, it's a symbol of the vampire hunting."

The cloak obscured any other armaments she might be carrying, and much of her appearance.
The second was an imposing individual, standing at about six foot eight, and though humanoid in form, her features were unmistakably draconic in nature. Her face was the visage of a dragon snout complete with bony protrusions and a mouthful of vicious looking fangs. In place of skin she had scales, crimson red, and on her back she sported a large pair of wings.
In one hand she clutched a halberd and a large shield was strapped to the forearm of the other, appearing to be crafted from crimson dragon scales matching her own coloration. Her armor was a finely crafted suit of scale mail, overlaid with what appeared to be dragon scales, also of the same crimson hue. Across her back was a longsword, securely sheathed and strapped between her wings.
Her footsteps were heavy upon the ground as the pair walked in somberness, but at last it was the dragonborn that broke the silence. Her footsteps fell silent as she looked to the escarpment, and the winding trail that would lead to the plateau above.

The way was barren and devoid of obstacles save a few fallen rocks and Taima slowly began her ascent to the plains above. It was here that she had led an ambush in the battle of Kryomor. Sighing heavily she finished her ascent, briefly coming into view at the top of the precipice before stepping away from it and towards the wasteland that lay before her. The elements had long ravaged the battle field and bits of snow dotted the hills, but even after all these years the telltale signs of battle still lingered. Bits of broken weapons, a few scraps of metal, and even the remnants of a few snow covered war machines dotted the area.
As she began to pick her way through the area, the sound of a crunch came from beneath her foot and she looked down at what appeared to be a bit of bone. Recent erosion had uncovered the grizzly history of the place, and the skeletal remains of those that had been left without burial to suffer the ravages of time.
After a moments deliberation, Taima drove her halberd into the frozen earth and lowered herself to one knee. Bowing her head, she offered a moments prayer to the lives lost so very long ago. A moments time to recall the past, before she and Sylvire could get back on the trail of the fugitives that they pursued.
