NASA lunar spacecraft complete prime mission ahead of schedule

ScienceDaily (May 30, 2012) ? A NASA mission to study the moon from crust to core has completed its prime mission earlier than expected. The team of NASA's Gravity Recovery and Interior Laboratory (GRAIL) mission, with twin probes named Ebb and Flow, is now preparing for extended science operations starting Aug. 30 and continuing through Dec. 3, 2012.

The GRAIL mission has gathered unprecedented detail about the internal structure and evolution of the moon. This information will increase our knowledge of how Earth and its rocky neighbors in the inner solar system developed into the diverse worlds we see today.

Since March 8, the spacecraft have operated around the clock for 89 days. From an orbit that passes over the lunar poles, they have collected data covering the entire surface three times. An instrument called the Lunar Gravity Ranging System onboard each spacecraft transmits radio signals that allow scientists to translate the data into a high-resolution map of the moon's gravitational field. The spacecraft returned their last data set of the prime mission May 29, 2012. The instruments were turned off at 10 a.m. PDT (1 p.m. EDT) when the spacecraft were 37 miles (60 kilometers) above the Sea of Nectar.

"Many of the measurement objectives were achieved from analysis of only half the primary mission data, which speaks volumes about the skill and dedication of our science and engineering teams," said Maria Zuber, principal investigator of GRAIL at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge. "While there is a great deal of work yet to be done to achieve the mission's science, it's energizing to realize that what we traveled from Earth to the moon for is right here in our hands."

"GRAIL delivered to Earth over 99.99 percent of the data that could have been collected, which underscores the flawless performance of the spacecraft, instrument and the Deep Space Network," said Zuber.

Both spacecraft instruments will be powered off until Aug. 30. The spacecraft will have to endure a lunar eclipse on June 4. The eclipse and the associated sudden changes in temperature and the energy-sapping darkness that accompanies the phenomena were expected and do not concern engineers about the spacecraft's health.

"Before launch, we planned for all of GRAIL's primary mission science to occur between lunar eclipses," said David Lehman, project manager of GRAIL from NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif. "But now that we have flown Ebb and Flow for a while, we understand them and are confident they can survive these eclipses in good shape."

The extended mission goal is to take an even closer look at the moon's gravity field. To achieve this, GRAIL mission planners will halve their current operating altitude to the lowest altitude that can be safely maintained.

"Orbiting at an average altitude of 14 miles (23 kilometers) during the extended mission, the GRAIL twins will be clearing some of the moon's higher surface features by about 5 miles (8 kilometers)," said Joe Beerer of JPL, GRAIL's mission manager. "If Ebb and Flow had feet, I think by reflex they'd want to pull them up every time they fly over a mountain."

Along with mission science, GRAIL's MoonKAM (Moon Knowledge Acquired by Middle school students) education and public outreach program is also extended. To date over 70,000 student images of the moon have been obtained. The MoonKAM program is led by Sally Ride, America's first woman in space, and her team at Sally Ride Science in collaboration with undergraduate students at the University of California in San Diego.

The GRAIL mission is managed by JPL for NASA's Science Mission Directorate in Washington. The mission is part of the Discovery Program managed at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala. NASA's Deep Space Network is an international network of antennas that supports interplanetary spacecraft missions and radio and radar astronomy observations for the exploration of the solar system and the universe. The network also supports selected Earth-orbiting missions. Lockheed Martin Space Systems in Denver built the spacecraft. JPL is a division of the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena.

(AP) ? Social media sites and blogs have lit up after eagle-eyed viewers spotted a surprise cameo in a Chinese TV documentary about the country's police force: Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg and his now-wife, Priscilla Chan.

The documentary by CCTV was part of a series on Chinese police and high-tech crime-solving methods. A few seconds of footage showing Zuckerberg and Chan walking behind two police officers were shown included in a brief clip posted online by the Hebei province satellite station.

The footage shows the couple wearing the same clothes they were photographed in during a March 27 visit to Shanghai. Zuckerberg wears his custom hooded sweat shirt, this time in brown, and blue jeans, while Chan wears a printed short dress.

The clip shows Zuckerberg looking at the back of the police officers and smiling broadly as the couple walks off-screen. As they are shown, the narrator says: "There is a serious shortage in China's police manpower."

It was not immediately known whether CCTV producers had knowingly inserted Zuckerberg into the documentary. Facebook is blocked in China, along with Twitter, YouTube and other foreign social media, a reflection of the leadership's fear that its power could be threatened by allowing citizens to organize outside of Communist Party control and enjoy unfettered access to information.

Zuckerberg has visited China to vacation and to meet with high-tech entrepreneurs, including a 2010 lunch with Robin Li, CEO of leading Chinese search engine Baidu. He married the 27-year-old Chan on May 20 in a private ceremony at their home, during the same week that he turned 28 and stock for the social network site began trading publicly.

A spokesman for Facebook, based in California, declined to comment Monday on the video clip.

(AP) ? North Korea is reporting a serious drought that could worsen already critical food shortages, but help is unlikely to come from the United States and South Korea following Pyongyang's widely criticized rocket launch.

North Korea has had little rain since April 27, with the country's western coastal areas particularly hard hit, according to a government weather agency in Pyongyang. The dry spell threatened to damage crops, officials said, as the country enters a critical planting season and as food supplies from the last harvest dwindle.

In at least one area of South Phyongan Province where journalists from The Associated Press were allowed to visit, the sun-baked fields appeared parched and cracked, and farmers complained of extreme drought conditions. Deeply tanned men, and women in sun bonnets, worked over cabbages and corn seedlings. Farmers cupped individual seedlings as they poured water from blue buckets onto the parched red soil.

"I've been working at the farm for more than 30 years, but I have never experienced this kind of severe drought," An Song Min, a farmer at the Tokhae Cooperative Farm in the Nampho area, told the AP.

It was not clear whether the conditions around Nampho were representative of a wider region. The U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization said it had not yet visited the affected regions to confirm the extent and severity of the reported drought.

North Korea has suffered chronic food shortages for the past two decades because of economic and agricultural mismanagement as well as natural disasters. A famine in the 1990s killed an estimated hundreds of thousands of people.

The country's past appeals for food aid have been met with some skepticism, however, amid concerns that aid would be diverted to the military and Pyongyang elite without reaching the hungry.

The U.S. government suspended food handouts to North Korea in 2009 after Pyongyang expelled foreign food distribution monitors.

In February, the U.S. reversed course and agreed to provide 240,000 metric tons of food aid in exchange for a freeze in nuclear and missile activities.

However, the deal collapsed after North Korea launched a long-range rocket last month in what it called a failed attempt to send a satellite into space to study the weather.

The launch was widely criticized by the United States and others as a thinly disguised attempt to test missile technology in violation of both the U.S. food deal and U.N. bans on North Korean ballistic tests. The launch drew U.N. Security Council condemnation.

"The United States would like to get to a place where we could once again contemplate providing nutritional assistance to North Korea," Glyn Davies, the top U.S. envoy for North Korea, said last week. "Sadly, that is not the case right now, in the wake of their decision, in March, to announce" the rocket launch.

South Korea's conservative government has cut off large-scale direct food aid to North Korea since taking office in 2008, saying Pyongyang should first take steps toward nuclear disarmament.

North Korea's dry spell is expected to last until the end of the month, the country's State Hydrometeorological Administration said.

Bureaucrats and workers have been mobilized to irrigate farms, repair wells and keep water-pumping equipment operating, state media reported.

Seedlings are being moved from seed beds to the fields, where they need enough moisture to form strong roots, Percy Misika, the Food and Agriculture Organization's representative for China, North Korea and Mongolia, said Monday from Beijing.

"Any dry spell at this critical time means the seedlings are definitely going to wilt away, and there will be no harvest at the end of the day," he said.

Misika said FAO officials are trying to visit areas suffering from a lack of rain. "If it's going to last for one or two weeks more, it's going to be critical, but if it's a shorter period of time there could be hope," he said.

Droughts are common in spring, winter and autumn in North Korea, the FAO said in a special report late last year. Climate change has led to more extreme weather, making winters colder, summers packed with more intense rain and typhoons, and droughts more frequent and prolonged, it said.

South Korea's Korea Meteorological Administration said it could not confirm the dry spell without on-the-ground equipment, though satellite photos have shown no big rain clouds over North Korea since late April. North Korean dispatches sent to an international weather center also show the country has had little rain over the past month, spokesman Jang Hyun-sik said in Seoul.

Keep Dental Costs Low While Getting the Best Dental Solution!

Single or multiple tooth loss, regardless of the cause, can be very embarrassing and a constant source of physical and social discomfort. While some causes behind a lost pearly white or two cannot be avoided, such as an accident, most cases of rampant tooth loss are caused by periodontal disease; an acute and chronic bacterial infection of the gums. This is in turn caused by poor lifelong oral hygiene and bad habits, such as smoking, excessive drinking and drug abuse. The dental costs of gum disease left untreated are partial and complete edentulism, the state of not having a single original adult tooth left. Thankfully, there are several tooth replacement solutions available for patients requiring a new set of teeth and the best of them for the most reasonable dental costs is widely agreed to be the All-on-4 dental implant protocol!

Your Dental Costs: Factors to Consider

Dental implants offer a proven comprehensive and long term solution to missing teeth and the All-on-4 protocol has gained enormous popularity thanks to its success in treating edentulism.

Having said this, dental costs can be at the forefront of a patient?s mind when looking for a tooth replacement solution. And frequently, the more ?groundbreaking? and ?innovative? a technology is, the more manufacturers charge for it! But with All on 4 cost in Houston, nothing could be further from the truth! Dental costs of oral rehabilitation using this protocol are actually substantially less for the patient; saving them an average of $25,000 on a brand new set of non-removable, aesthetic and immediately functional teeth! And here?s why?

All on 4 Cost in Houston: Dental Costs Savings

The dental costs of the All-on-4 protocol are substantially lower than those incurred by traditional placement techniques for several reasons. But perhaps the greatest is that it allows skilled and qualified dentist, Dr. Wayne Brueggen, to replace a patient?s entire set of old and failing teeth almost always without the need for bone grafting beforehand. Other dental costs saved include:

    • The need for multiple surgeries; the All on 4 cost in Houston almost never requires more than a single surgery for complete oral rehabilitation.
    • The dental costs incurred by 20 or more implants; the All on 4 cost in Houston only requires a total of eight implants to give patients a brand new set of both upper and lower teeth.
    • Without the need for lengthy, painful and expensive bone grafting, patients save all those dental costs they would otherwise be spending on multiple consultations, surgeries, medications and time off from work.
    • The All on 4 cost in Houston covers a much shorter procedure, which can almost always be done in as little as a single day. Patients are thus saved the recurring trips to their doctor, both for the implant procedure and future check-ups.
    • The All-on-4 has been proven to be 8% to 10% more effective in the treatment of rampant tooth loss and edentulism than traditional implant techniques. Implants that fail and require replacement and/or restoration incur further dental costs in the future.

A Final Note on the All on 4 Cost in Houston

If you are looking to get back your confident smile at affordable dental costs, the All-on-4 is the best route forward. With a much shorter road to oral rehabilitation, this breakthrough dental implant protocol is making a much greater quality of life accessible to millions of edentulous and near-edentulous people across the United States; and all for affordable dental costs.

Just 2 in 10 Latino Students Complete Community College in Six Years

I think most reports downplay the key factors in the lack of student success. There's a general social breakdown in discipline and habits, largely cultural/socio-economic, and these are compounded by the failure of students to attain basic proficiency in their K-12 years. Top that off with a lot of kids coming from recent immigrant families, often the first in their family to attend college (so there's less linguistic and knowledge-based support in the home environment), and the basic foundation of learning isn't as strong as it might be in other demographics. It's political incorrect to say this, but it's the truth.

See the Long Beach Press-Telegram, "Latino college students in Long Beach struggle to graduate in college graduation struggle":

LONG BEACH -- Gerardo Raya enrolled in college in 2008 with the hopes of graduating in four years and scoring a job as an animator or illustrator.

But four years later, Raya is still at Long Beach City College struggling to finish the minimal coursework he needs to transfer to a four-year university.

The 24-year-old said he's had trouble balancing his work as a recreational aide for a local high school while trying to study for a full load of classes. He's had to drop classes over the years due to work conflicts and financial problems, but Raya said he's hopeful he can transfer to Cal State Long Beach next year.

"I thought I'd be done by now but it's been really hard," he said. "I didn't think it would be this hard."

Raya isn't the only student struggling to finish college. Studies show that while more students are enrolled in college, they're taking longer to graduate.

Of the students who start four-year bachelor's degree programs, just over half finish within six years, according to the National Center for Higher Education Management Systems. Fewer than three out of 10 full- time community college students graduate with an associate degree within three years.

As a young Latino, Raya may face additional hurdles. A study released in March by the California-based Campaign for College Opportunity found that the college transfer rate for Latino students is about half that of white students -- 14 percent compared with 28 percent.

And while Latino students make up almost half of California's college-age population (age 18 to 24), they remain critically underrepresented in the state's four-year universities, according to the report, titled "Latino Students and Higher Education: California Profile."

    Among the key findings:

-- Seven percent of Latinos age 25 and older held a college degree in 2009.

-- Two in 10 Latino students in community college complete an associate degree or transfer after six years, compared to 37 percent of whites.

-- Of the Latino students who graduated from high school in 2009, 16 percent met the requirements for admission into the Cal State University and University of California systems.

    'Our future workforce'

Michele Siqueiros, executive director of the Campaign for College Opportunity, said the findings show a disturbing trend in one of the state's fastest-growing populations.
"Over half of the children in public schools are Latino, and these are the people who are going to make up our future workforce," Siqueiros said. "If we don't pay special attention to this group now, we can just assume this gap will continue. If we work to prepare more Latino students for college, we'll benefit as a whole society."

Siqueiros said many factors contribute to the lag in Latino graduation rates, including poverty, language barriers and lack of college information. Many Latino students are the first in their families to attend college, and while parents may have high aspirations for their children, they don't always understand the financial and academic demands of college, she said.

What Causes Back Pain ? Understanding Why It Happens | Ju Jitzu ...

Many people suffer from back pain which can be induced by many different factors. A single incident in a persons life can actually lead to long-lasting back pain. Sometimes it is a symptom of an illness that you have. More frequently, however, it comes about as the result of your daily habits, many of which you might not even be aware of. The way you sleep, sit, walk and exercise can all have an impact on your spine and contribute to back pain if something is causing too much strain. One less obvious cause of back pain is wearing footwear that is not suitable. Wearing improper footwear will not give your back the foundation it needs. Uncomfortable shoes can change your posture and the way you walk, which, over time, can contribute to back pain. When women wear shoes with higher heels, their weight is not spread on the shoe in a way that will provide substantial support. Cowboy boots can present a similar problem for both men and women. You will be putting several parts of your body at risk for strain or injury if you opt for inappropriate footwear. When you opt for practical shoes that fit your lifestyle; you will be more able to maintain great posture, while keeping your back in a healthier state. Sleeping on a mattress that doesn?t properly support your back can contribute to back problems, especially lower back pain. When you sleep on a poor quality mattress every night, your spine isn?t kept in alignment and over time this contributes to back pain. There is no ?one perfect mattress? that will work for everyone but, one thing is for sure, an old, misshapen, lumpy mattress isn?t anyone?s solution! If you wake up with back pain every morning, you may want to consider buying a new mattress. You can inadvertently cause back strain ? leading to back pain ? by sleeping with too many pillows under your head. This puts your neck out of line with your spinal column, straining your back. Keeping your head propped up with a stack of pillows takes it out of alignment with your spine. As a result, you may develop back pain. Even though old age is not actually the reason for back pain, there are quite a few folks that will have had previous issues that seem more prevalent as they age. Osteoporosis, usually happening to women, reduces the strength of the bones and fractures are more apt to happen. Osteoarthritis can plague the whole body, but the spine is the most inclined to be affected. Many people develop degenerative disc disease as they get older, due to decreasing bone density. There are also a number of less common ailments that older people are at risk for and which cause back pain. There are answers to these issues; just remember to take on a good exercise regimen and take the necessary vitamins to maintain crucial bone density. Suffering from back pain is very distressing. In fact, it can make it extremely difficult to even rise out of bed each day. You will more easily be able to prevent back pain from returning if you have been able to find out the root cause of your pain. If your back pain is caused by health issues, it?s wise to get those problems taken care of first. If not, simply pay attention to your overall health and fitness, your diet, and any other issues in your life that may lead to back pain. learn more about back pain relief or the similar topic of back pain treatment .

Taxes: increase of the indirect taxes | Tax-Evasion.org

Posted on May 25, 2012 by admin

In the recent budget speech Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan announced that the Finances were in a good health. But unfortunately this appearance is wrong.

For the past 10 years middle- and high-income groups in South Africa have paid more than 40 % of their gross income in taxes and so-called invisible taxes. Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan announced in his recent budget speech that the indirect taxes would even increase.

For example the fuel levy is rising by 20c/litre and Road Accident Fund levy by 8c/litre. This means that petrol is expected to go up by at least 28c/litre. also the electricity levy has risen 250%, part of which companies can pass on to the consumer.

Although the consumer has to pay high taxes, he also has to carry all costs of education, security and medical expenses. The government should provide these services, but the consumer has to pay for it in addition to the taxes. And the consumer doesn?t get any service in return. Now consumers are expected to pay for roads as well.

An other problem is that only about 6 million out of a population of 50 million pay personal income tax, whereas 16 million people receive welfare.?In 2012/13 personal income tax will comprise 35% of government?s total income. By 2014 the income tax is expected to be government?s major source of income. However there is a move to tax companies higher through capital gain tax and higher dividend tax then expected.

The announced income tax relief of R9,5bn is mostly directed at the lower-income groups. The middle- and high-income groups are being increasingly expected to contribute to the fiscus.

The saving announced by Pravin Gordhan has to be seen critical: The lower income category will have a saving of up to 72,5%, whereas some high-income earners will only save 2,1 %. Tough there is a relief regarding the income tax, but the indirect taxes will increase at the same time.

Weninar: Online Video Marketing: 7 Steps How To Get Started With YouTube Video Marketing

Ok, hello again everybody this is Hari Luker from Local Honcho and today I've got the great pleasure to be talking to you about YouTube, specifically how your business can leverage this popular social media platform to build your business.

We've got a lot of great content to cover today, so let's get right to it!

What is YouTube marketing? Let's get on the same page and make sure we're all using the same definition. Here's one that I use. YouTube marketing is...

"A subset of social media marketing that uses video content to promote a business and its products and services, as well as add value, and entertain and educate users."

Hopefully that's simple enough that we can all agree to it.

I always like to address the 'Who cares' question right up front. Now, if you registered for this webinar, the chances are pretty good that you have some idea of YouTube's potential to help your business, but maybe there are some skeptics in the audience today who still need convincing... the stats on this slide should help.

As you can see: everyone is on YouTube at some point or other. And usage continues to go up year over year.

In fact, look at the growth of YouTube versus that of TV viewing. Online video is absolutely exploding in popularity, and you can be sure that YouTube has its competitive eyes on the major television networks and even the movie studios.

Here's a great illustration of the popularity of YouTube. 48 hours of video uploaded every minute in 2011! And you can see the growth over the years, starting at 8 hours in 2007.

And there are now 3 BILLION YouTube VIEWS EACH DAY! 3 Billion with a capital B! It's hard to even comprehend.

What's more, YouTube is the 4th most visited site on the web, and it is also the second most popular search engine on the planet ahead of both Yahoo and Bing, according to data from comScore. In fact, in 2009 YouTube had 50 percent more search activity than Yahoo.

The other thing that many people don't know about YouTube is that it's a huge social network, that is growing more social every day as video becomes more of the center of people's internet experience.

The reality is that EVERY business can benefit from YouTube. That may sound like a stretch, but it's true, and I'll give you some reasons why and some examples to demonstrate the possibilities.

Now let's move on to talk about the seven specific steps you can take to ensure your YouTube marketing success.

Step Number 1 - Start with keyword research. What's your target market searching for when they go to YouTube? Find out, and you'll have instant insight into what kind of content you should create.

Step #2 - you'll want to make sure to incorporate the keywords that you find into the video itself, the title, the description, and even the video's file name.

All of these suggestions play an important part in ensuring that your video ranks as high as possible in the search engines. After all, people still search using keywords.

Third, as a rule, keep your videos short (between 2-5 minutes), relevant (to your audience's needs, wants, and interests) and simple.

Again, you aren't trying to win an Oscar - no need to overdo it on production value. And people have very short attention spans, so don't make them too long.

Four, include specific calls to action when appropriate. If you want your viewers to do something specific as a result of watching your video - such as visit your website, or share the video with a friend, etc. - ask them to do it at the end of your video.

Next, use other social media channels, such as Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter, to promote your videos. Again, these different channels don't exist in isolation, they should be leveraged to get the most value from each of them.

Next, don't "post and run". If you are creating content in a competitive vertical, you can't expect to just create the content and have it ranked #1 in Google over night.

Be sure to budget some time to optimize your video for search engine visibility and invest in an SEO process like you would for your website if you hope to get the video highly ranked.

And finally, keep at it. Make several videos! Make it a habit to create content on a regular basis! You should create a YouTube page for your company and treat it as your own "channel" - fill it up with compelling content on a regular basis.

Ok, so that's the 7 tips for YouTube marketing success.

Yahoo Axis 'search browser' makes surprise debut

    7 hrs.

Here?s some news you probably didn?t expect to read: Yahoo just released its own Web browser. Well, sorta.

The new software, dubbed Yahoo Axis, is being called a "search browser." Its main trick is the ability to bypass the standard list of links and instead send users directly to websites and pages via thumbnails.

Axis is already available as an?iPad?and?iPhone?app. Rather than releasing its own desktop browser, however, Yahoo?is offering Axis plugins?for Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari and Chrome.?Once installed, the plugin appears as a search box at the bottom of the browser, expanding when a user enters a query.

CNET News?reporter?Rafe Needleman has been testing Axis and says it is actually good. He calls it "an aggressive product for the struggling Yahoo to launch out of its search group."

I?ve been less impressed in my brief usage of the iPhone app. The user interface is difficult to maneuver and not very intuitive for someone coming to it cold. It tries to squeeze a ton of stuff into that little screen.

The desktop plugin, which comes in the form of a search bar at the bottom of the browser, is a better experience so far, but far from perfect. Using the Axis plugin for Chrome on a Mac, the search bar has been unresponsive at times when I?ve tried to enter a query.

Yahoo?s search results have been provided by Microsoft Bing since the companies agreed to collaborate on search technology and advertising. There?s no mention of the results being powered by Bing in the Axis app, at least not that I?ve been able to find. (Msnbc is a joint venture of Microsoft and NBC Universal).

The news was apparently being held until later Wednesday night, but it leaked out thanks to an email sent by someone from Yahoo and?republished by the tech site Launch.

Yahoo has been through a?tumultuous?couple of years, with CEO Scott Thompson recently leaving the company?after a scandal over his resume.
