LONDON (AP) ? Mike Oldfield wants to use the Olympics opening ceremony as a rallying cry.

The British musician performed his most famous composition, "Tubular Bells," during Friday's spectacular, and says it was an honor ? and a vindication for a much-reviled musical genre: instrumental rock.

The album "Tubular Bells" was released in 1973, used as theme music for "The Exorcist" and sold millions. But a few years later the punk movement triggered a backlash against its brand of swirling progressive rock.

Oldfield says it's time for a comeback.

Sales of "Tubular Bells" took off after Friday's ceremony ? rising 757 percent at music chain HMV ? and Oldfield said Tuesday he hopes to use the ceremony "as a relaunch for instrumental music ? real music."

"Let's throw away all the computer software," Oldfield said from his home in the Bahamas.

He said the sophistication of modern technology means "you just get a load of software and click a few buttons. You don't have to have the slightest bit of musical talent."

He said 'Tubular Bells' was played on real musical instruments.

Despite his disenchantment with some modern music, Oldfield praised other musicians at Friday's show ? especially the electronic duo Underworld, the London ceremony's musical directors.

The 59-year-old said he felt a "glow of pride" when director Danny Boyle approached him a year ago and asked him to be in the ceremony, which celebrated five decades of British music.

Oldfield said his music "suffered the inevitable backlash that everyone had to go through. If you are up, there is the inevitable down."

"To finally be vindicated 40 years later, to be seen as something that is valid and important ... was wonderful," he said.

Like Paul McCartney, Arctic Monkeys and other big-name acts, Oldfield was paid a token fee of 1 pound ($1.57) for his appearance.

He performed versions of "Tubular Bells" and his piece "In Dulci Jubilo" during one of the evening's most striking scenes ? a tribute to the National Health Service performed by dancing nurses and pajama-clad children on oversized beds.

Oldfield, whose father was an NHS doctor and mother a World War II nurse, said Britain was right to sing the institution's praises.

"You get used to the NHS if you live in England," he said. "You hurt yourself, you call the ambulance, they'll take you to the emergency and they'll treat you for nothing."

"It's a wonderful thing," he added. "It's right to celebrate it."

BEIRUT (AP) ? The Syrian regime accused regional powerhouses Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Turkey of trying to destroy the country and vowed Sunday that it would defeat rebels who have captured large swathes of the commercial hub Aleppo.

Military forces in Aleppo fired tank and artillery shells at neighborhoods as rebels tried to repel the government air and ground assault. According to activists, rebels who launched an operation to take over Syria's largest city a week ago are estimated to control between a third and a half of Aleppo's neighborhoods.

Foreign Minister Walid al-Moallem, on a visit to Iran, leveled some rare public criticism of Sunni powers in the Middle East, saying Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Turkey are supporting a plot hatched by Israel to destroy Syria. The three countries have all been backing rebels trying to overthrow authoritarian President Bashar Assad.

"Israel is the mastermind of all in this crisis," Moallem told a joint news conference in Tehran with his Iranian counterpart Ali Akbar Salehi . "They (Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Turkey) are fighting in the same front."

The battle for Aleppo, once a bastion of support for Assad's regime, is critical for both the regime and the opposition. Its fall would be a major blow to Assad, giving the opposition a major strategic victory with a new stronghold in the north.

"They mobilized all their armed terrorists and tried to capture Damascus in less than a week," Moallem said. "They were defeated. Today, they've gone to Aleppo and definitely they will be defeated in Aleppo," he added. The rebels mounted a challenge to the regime in Damascus before the assault on Aleppo, but after a week of intense clashes, they were defeated.

Iran, Syria's only remaining ally in the Middle East, has provided Assad's government with military and political backing for years, and has kept up its strong support for the regime since the uprising began in March 2011.

Sunday's bombardment was part of a government counter-offensive to retake control of districts that had fallen into rebel hands last week at the beginning of their bid to capture Aleppo.

Activists said the shelling was most intense in the southwestern neighborhoods of Salaheddine, Bustan al-Qasr and parts of Saif al-Dawla, some of the first areas seized by the rebels when they started the push last week after being routed in a similar attack against the capital Damascus.

"Life in Aleppo has become unbearable. I'm in my car and I'm leaving right now," said a Syrian opposition writer who was fleeing the city Sunday. "There's shelling night and day, every day," he said, speaking on condition of anonymity for fear of reprisals.

The writer and other activists from Aleppo said economic conditions had become dire in the city.

"Bread, gasoline and gas are being sold on the black market at very high prices," he said. "Many things are in shortage."

State-run news agency SANA said security agents were hunting down armed groups in several areas of Aleppo including Salaheddine, inflicting heavy losses upon the "terrorists" ? the term authorities use to describe the rebels.

SANA quoted an Aleppo official as saying troops would continue until the city is "purged" of armed groups and peace and tranquility is restored.

Syrian Interior Minister Mohammad al-Shaar vowed late Saturday that the Syrian army would root out terrorism and restore order to Syria. Al-Shaar was making his first televised appearance since he was wounded in the July 18 bomb attack in Damascus that killed four other top security leaders in Assad's inner circle.

Al-Shaar's arm was bandaged, but he said he was back at his job with "greater determination."

Mohammad Saeed, an Aleppo-based activist, said Sunday's shelling was some of the heaviest seen yet.

"But the rebels are still holding up well," he said. "No ground troops have been able to enter. They are shelling from outside." He said rebels were fighting back against the attackers.

He said around 200 fighters entered the city Sunday to join about 1,000 fighters who had poured into the city in the past few days to take on the Syrian army, which had been massing forces around the city ahead of the bombardment.

He also said rebels have received "a new batch of weapons and ammunition," but declined to say from where.

An amateur video posted online by activists showed flames and black smoke billowing from a building in the Bustan al-Qasr district of Aleppo.

Another video showed rebels celebrating the seizure of a tank in the town of al-Bab in Aleppo countryside. Dozens of rebels, some waving Kalashnikov rifles, sat atop the tank as it drove through al-Bab, while residents shouted "Allahu Akbar" and motorists honked their horns in celebration.

The Britain-based activist group Syrian Observatory for Human Rights also reported heavy fighting and explosions in Aleppo. It reported intense clashes in the Bab al-Hadeed, al-Zahraa and al-Arqoub neighborhoods.

The international community has raised an outcry about a possible massacre in this city of 3 million but acknowledged there was little they could do to stop the bloodshed. The foreign minister of Russia, a powerful ally of Syria, said over the weekend it was "simply unrealistic" for Damascus to cede control of Aleppo.

Since the rebel assault on Aleppo began a week ago, about 162 people have been killed, mostly civilians, according to the Observatory. Some 19,000 people have been killed since the uprising began, the group says.

The violence has sent refugees flooding into neighboring countries including Jordan, Turkey, Iraq and Lebanon.

Jordan said it had opened its first tent camp for Syrians, saying a surge of refugees forced it to do so.

Authorities had been reluctant to set up the camps, possibly to avoid angering Assad's regime by concentrating images of civilians fleeing his military onslaught.

But with 142,000 Syrians refugees and their numbers growing daily by up to 2,000, Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh said Sunday that Jordan had no other choice. He spoke at the camp's opening ceremony in the hamlet of Zataari, about 11 kilometers (7 miles) from the northern border with Syria.

As Salamualikum. Ramadan ul Mubarak. I need to understand zakat on retirement funds contributed by both employer and employee. As a teacher, I have a TIAA-CREF retirement account where I contribute and my employer contributes a matching percentage of the salary. All my investment is in stocks since other options are interest bearing. ?I can not receive the cash until it vest when I reach retirement age. Do I have to pay zakat on the amount of this retirement fund that has been accumulated?

Retirement funds and similar are something many people ask about it.

Let?s look at the issues at hand above based on the two questions presented:

1-????? How much Zakat is paid on business partnerships and investments?\

2-????? Is my retirement account (such as 401k, IRA, or similar) liable for Zakat?

How much Zakat is paid on business partnerships and investments?\

Business partnerships and investments are due 2.5% when paying Zakat on them. Mutual Funds, which invest in a portfolio of stocks (shares) are business partnerships and are treated as such when calculating profits and zakat.?To make them analogous to agricultural projects is incorrect for several reasons most of which cannot be mentioned in a single post. Those interested can look for module five of my Zakat course entitled ?Advance Topics in Zakat Law.?

Is my retirement account (such as 401k or IRA) liable for Zakat?

Modern scholars differed as to when to pay zakat on retirement accounts such as 401k, IRA?S,? and other similar investment vehicles wherein a person does not actively have control over and cannot access without penalty the funds therein until a threshold or time period is met.

The more correct of these 2 opinions is that Zakat is not due on your retirement account (401k, IRA, or similar) until it is time to cash out without penalty.

• If the conditions of that account state that after a person reaches a certain age (say 55 or older) then he or she may withdraw without penalty then Zakat is paid on that amount when you reach that age. Each subsequent year, if Nisaab still exists in the account, you would pay on that account.
• If you cannot access the funds in that account, or you are penalized for early withdrawal, then you are not liable to pay Zakat on that account.
  • Zakat is only due on unhindered, fully accessible wealth which is actively managed by the investor.
  • Any wealth which is lost, inaccessible, held in an illiquid state, or cannot be accessed freely without penalty is not liable for Zakat.

• If the wealth in the retirement fund is designated for the employee then he must pay 2.5 percent of that amount only when he cashes out without penalty at the time those funds are made available to him.
• If he or she chooses to cash out early and pay the penalty then they must still pay Zakat on the amount withdrawn immediately at the time of availability regardless of the matching funds contributed by his employer or not.
• If he is not allowed to cash out, but instead is forced to take a loan from the 401k fund and pay it back with interest, then he or she will not pay Zakat on this amount until it remains in possession for one year after receiving it from the 401k fund.
• You pay 2.5% on the amount available to you at the time the money is made available to you without penalty. You do not compound 2.5% for the entire tenure of the investment; you only pay 2.5% for one year on the amount made available at cashout without penalty.

The company is operated by Lodestar Day Resource Center and is one of 16 agencies housed on the 11-acre Human Services Campus in Phoenix, which aids the Phoenix metropolitan area?s homeless community.

?Everything in some form that we do, at least the final processing, is done right here in downtown Phoenix,? said Michael Tapscott, special projects manager at the resource center. ?Truly, 100 percent goes back into the non-profit company that hires homeless individuals and trains them.?

Tapscott hopes getting Just B ? B Just products in retail outlets spurs growth.

?When you live on the streets, you?re no better or worse than anyone else, but you learn a different skill set ? survival,? he said. ?So when people come on to Just B, we try to teach them the skills that most of us were taught by our parents and early employers that we don?t even think about.?

The earliest days of Just B ? B Just began about three years ago. A product was first presented at a private corporate event, where it was a hit.

Since then, Just B ? B Just products have been sold at farmers markets, other private events and some small businesses. The positive response encouraged Lodestar Day Resource Center to contact Whole Foods Market.

Lawmakers press for tough Iran sanctions bill

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Republicans and Democrats are pressuring congressional negotiators to produce legislation imposing the severest penalties on Iran, targeting its energy sector and financial institutions as the United States seeks to weaken Tehran economically and derail its pursuit of nuclear weapons.

With just one week before Congress' August break, proponents of tough sanctions see this as their last, best chance for far-reaching, crippling penalties as recent high-level talks between world powers and Iran have failed to curb its uranium enrichment. Iran insists that its program is solely for peaceful purposes.

"Now is the time to ratchet up the pressure," Rep. Ted Deutch, D-Fla., said in an interview this week.

Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, R-Fla., chairwoman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, and Sen. Tim Johnson, D-S.D., chairman of the Senate Banking Committee, have been negotiating behind closed doors for several weeks to reach consensus on sanctions legislation that the House passed in December and the Senate approved in May.

About a half dozen Republicans and Democrats who favor fierce penalties are determined to see the toughest measure yet and have been insisting to negotiators that a watered-down bill is unacceptable.

"We owe it to the American people to exhaust every possible non-military option to prevent Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapons capability," Sen. Mark Kirk, R-Ill., said in a statement.

Rep. Robert Dold, R-Ill., and Rep. Brad Sherman, D-Calif., sent a letter this week to the negotiators calling for a final bill that includes a provision declaring Iran's energy sector "a zone of proliferation concern." The blacklisting would bar all transactions with the state-run National Iranian Oil Company.

"This would have the effect of making virtually any transaction with ? and provision of services for ? the firms in Iran's energy sector sanctionable," Dold and Sherman wrote.

The lawmakers also said any legislation should include sanctions on insurance companies that knowingly provide coverage to an entity that has already been penalized.

They also are pressing for sanctions on the directors and shareholders of organizations like SWIFT, the Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunications, unless they stop providing services to the Central Bank of Iran.

"If diplomacy is to succeed in ending Iran's nuclear weapons program, we must enact tough legislation now," the two wrote. "Sanctions are having a real impact on Iran's economy, but not yet enough to change the regime's strategic calculus."

The bill the House passed last year would restrict foreign subsidiaries of U.S. companies from doing business with Iran. Bartering is included among the activities that could be sanctioned, and Americans would be prohibited from conducting commercial or financial transactions with the Revolutionary Guard.

The Senate-passed bill would target Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps, require companies that trade on the U.S. stock exchange to disclose any Iran-related business to the Securities and Exchange Commission and would expand penalties for energy and uranium mining joint ventures with Tehran.

The bill also would deny visas and freeze assets on individuals and companies that supply Iran with technology that could be used to crack down on its citizens, such as tear gas, rubber bullets and surveillance equipment.

Iran sanctions is one of the few issues in Congress that has strong bipartisan support as lawmakers look to thwart Iran's nuclear objectives and show Israel the steps they are willing to take on behalf of the Mideast ally. Last year, the Senate voted 100-0 for legislation by Sens. Bob Menendez, D-N.J., and Mark Kirk, R-Ill., that targeted financial institutions that do business with Iran's Central Bank.

"Iranians continue to look for work-arounds around financial sanctions," said Mark Dubowitz, a sanctions expert and executive director of the Foundation for Defense of Democracies.

Lawmakers, including House Republican and Democratic leaders, are hopeful that they can reach consensus on the measure and pass a bill next week.

Researchers said the study had ?potential negative?consequences for people in long-term relationships.

In a survey, 88 pairs of young male and female friends?were asked to rate their attraction to each other in a?confidential questionnaire.

Men, whether attached or single, were more likely to be?attracted to their female friends and wanted to go on a date?with them than the other way around.

They also assumed their female friends were more?romantically interested in them than they actually were ?and?women tended to be unaware of this.

Single and attached women showed the same level of?attraction to their male friend. But attached women tended?only to want something to come of that attraction if their?relationship was in trouble.

Women were also less attracted to attached men.

A second questionnaire for 140 middle-aged people, who?were almost all married, found levels of attraction between?male and female friends fairly equal.

Middle-aged men?s attraction to their female friends was?much lower than that of the younger men, except among those?who were single.

For women, levels of attraction had stayed the same.

Participants of both questionnaires said they gained?benefits from friendship with the opposite sex including?getting good advice and boosting their confidence.

The study is published in the Journal of ?Social and?Personal Relationships?.

Those who did harbour a secret crush were five times more?likely to see it as a potential problem than a benefit. But?more men than women saw it as a perk.

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Katherine Jackson is apparently back home, reuniting with Michael Jackson's children after a judge temporarily took away her guardianship because of her dayslong absence from them.

Paris Jackson tweeted early Thursday morning: "grandma's here! (hash)thankyougod." Katherine Jackson's son Marlon also posted a note on Twitter saying his mother had returned, adding she looked and sounded great.

On Wednesday, a judge removed Katherine Jackson as guardian temporarily and named her grandson Tito Joe "TJ" Jackson as temporary caretaker of the late legend's three minor children amid a bitter family dispute over Michael Jackson's estate.

Superior Court Judge Mitchell Beckloff issued the ruling because Katherine Jackson was in Arizona and hadn't spoken with the children in several days. TJ Jackson now has the ability to control the hilltop home where the children live and to take on other supervision duties.

Katherine Jackson told ABC News that the court ruling was "based on a bunch of lies."

"I am devastated that while I've been away, that my children, my grandchildren, have been taken away from me, and I'm coming home to see about that, also," she said reading from a prepared statement.

She denied the suggestion made in court and in court filings to support TJ Jackson's appointment that she was being held against her will.

"I am here today to let everybody know that I am fine and I am here with my children, and my children would never do a thing to me like that, holding me against my will," she said while her children Randy, Janet and Rebbie were seated next to her. "It's very stupid for people to think that."

But on Thursday, Michael Jackson's son Prince posted a photo of what he said was a group text message involving Rebbie and Janet in which he demanded contact with his grandmother and Janet allegedly responded: "Please don't let them."

"As long as I can remember my dad repeatedly warned me of certain people and their ways," Prince Michael tweeted. "Although I am happy my grandma was returned, after speaking with her I realize how misguided and how badly she was lied to. I'm really angry and hurt."

Beckloff said there was no evidence that Katherine Jackson had done anything wrong, but instead it appeared she was being prevented from fulfilling her role as guardian through the "intentional acts of third parties." He didn't elaborate but made the decision after reading court filings in which TJ Jackson expressed concern that Katherine Jackson was being prevented from returning.

He cited a Monday incident in which Janet, Randy and Jermaine Jackson arrived at the children's home and told them they could speak with their grandmother but had to leave with them.

"This was odd and disturbing to me and (the children) and heightened our concern that our grandmother was being prohibited from returning home," TJ Jackson wrote in a sworn statement. The incident turned into a confrontation between two male adults at the house and sheriff's officials say it remains an ongoing battery investigation.

Beckloff listened as attorneys described Katherine Jackson's demeanor as unusual on phone calls placed to the children hours before the hearing.

TJ Jackson's attorney Charles Shultz also revealed in court filings that the children were forced to miss school Wednesday because of concerns about their security.

Beckloff ruled the Jackson children could not leave California without court approval.

Katherine Jackson's attorney Perry Sanders Jr. said after the hearing that he spoke with his client as she was driving back to Los Angeles from Tucson, Ariz., where she had been since July 15.

"She sounded absolutely fine, lucid and her normal self," he said.

Sanders plans to ask the court to reinstate Katherine Jackson as guardian of the children when she is back in Los Angeles. He was looking forward to meeting with her in person on Thursday.

The public battle was revealed early Sunday after a relative reported Katherine Jackson missing, but she was later located safely with other family members in Arizona.

Jermaine Jackson has said his mother was following doctor's orders to cut off communications with the children, who range in age from 10 to 15. He didn't provide further details.

In addition to concerns about the safety of Jackson's children, some of Michael Jackson's siblings have recently called on the executors of his estate to resign.

Randy Jackson appeared Tuesday on Al Sharpton's MSNBC show PoliticsNation and said he believes his brother's will is a fake and that the executors have engaged in criminal activity.

The estate, which recently reported it saw $475 million in gross earnings since Jackson's death in June 2009, has denied wrongdoing and called the accusations "false and defamatory."

Beckloff, who also oversees financial issues affecting Jackson's estate, was initially reluctant to appoint a temporary guardian but changed his mind after hearing from several attorneys who expressed concern about the family's problems.

He made the ruling after hearing TJ Jackson's description of a "strange" conversation he had with Katherine Jackson on Tuesday evening.

"I've never heard my grandmother talk like that," he said reluctantly. "In every way. The sound in her voice. The pauses."

He said some of her speech sounded slurred and she used words that made him wonder if she was speaking in code.

Her son Marlon echoed those concerns on Twitter, complaining that siblings Janet, Randy and Jermaine were keeping her from him.

The children's guardian ad litem, Margaret Lodise, said she spoke with the children and the two oldest, Prince and Paris, supported the appointment of a temporary guardian. Lodise did not ask the youngest son, 10-year-old Blanket, for his views.

Lodise is responsible for overseeing the children's interests in the estate of their father.

Schultz said TJ Jackson didn't want to replace Katherine Jackson as permanent guardian. Still, the judge noted that TJ Jackson would have to petition to become the permanent guardian within 48 hours and added that such a petition might not be heard if Katherine Jackson re-emerges.

Sanders said he would fight any move to have her permanently replaced.

He said he met with Randy and Janet Jackson in Tucson, Ariz., on Tuesday, but he was not allowed to see his client. He said he still hoped the recent events were a misunderstanding, but he described them as "chaos."
